Overview

Clipwise AI is a browser extension that converts webpages to Markdown format. Your privacy is important to us, and this policy explains how the extension handles your data.

Data Controller

The data controller for Clipwise AI is Dennis Morello, an independent software developer based in Italy. For any privacy-related inquiries, you can contact the data controller at dennismorello@gmail.com.

Data Collection

Clipwise AI does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data or webpage content to our servers.

The extension only accesses webpage content after an explicit user action (clicking the extension icon). All webpage content processing happens entirely within your browser. We have no ability to access, view, or store any content you convert. External communication only occurs for premium license validation and when you explicitly use the "Open in ChatGPT/Claude" feature.

Legal Basis for Processing

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other applicable privacy laws, we process limited data based on the following legal grounds:

Contractual necessity (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR)

For premium license holders, we process license keys and browser instance identifiers to fulfill our contractual obligation to provide you with the premium features you purchased.

Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR)

We have a legitimate interest in preventing fraud and enforcing license activation limits (up to 3 browsers per license) to protect our business and ensure fair use of the service.

For free tier users, no personal data is processed externally. All operations occur locally in your browser without any legal basis requirement.

How the Extension Works

When you click the Clipwise AI extension icon:

1. The extension reads the HTML content of the current webpage
2. Content is processed locally using Mozilla Readability to extract the main article
3. The extracted content is converted to Markdown format using Turndown
4. The result is stored temporarily in your browser's local storage
5. Your daily conversion count is tracked locally to enforce free tier limits (resets at midnight)

Permissions Explained

Clipwise AI requests the following permissions:

activeTab

Allows the extension to read the current page's content only when you click the extension icon. The extension cannot access any page without your explicit action.

storage

Used to store the converted Markdown, your daily conversion count, and premium license data (if applicable) in your browser's local storage. All data stays on your device.

sidePanel

Enables the extension to display the converted Markdown in Chrome's built-in side panel interface.

scripting

Required to inject a small script that reads the page's HTML content when you click the extension icon. Also used for the "Open in ChatGPT/Claude" feature to automatically fill the prompt input.

Host permissions (chatgpt.com, claude.ai)

Required only for the "Open in ChatGPT/Claude" feature. Allows the extension to automatically paste your converted Markdown into the AI prompt input. These permissions are never used unless you explicitly click the corresponding button.

Open in ChatGPT/Claude Feature

Clipwise AI includes an optional feature to send your converted Markdown directly to ChatGPT or Claude. This feature is entirely user-initiated. The extension will never send your content to these services automatically.

When you use this feature:

1. The extension opens a new browser tab with the selected AI service (chatgpt.com or claude.ai)
2. Once the page loads, the extension automatically pastes your converted Markdown into the prompt input
3. Your content is then subject to the AI service's privacy policy

Important:

• This is an optional feature. You can always use the "Copy" button instead
• The content goes directly to the AI service; Clipwise AI does not intercept, store, or process it
• Review the privacy policies of OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude) to understand how they handle your data

Premium License Validation

If you purchase a premium license, the extension communicates with Lemon Squeezy (our payment and licensing provider) to validate your license. This is the only external network communication the extension makes.

What data is sent to Lemon Squeezy:

• Your license key (to verify it's valid and active)
• A unique browser instance identifier (to enforce device limits, up to 3 browsers per license)

What is NOT sent:

• Any webpage content you convert
• Your browsing history or URLs
• Any other personal information

License validation occurs when you activate a license and periodically (once per day) while using premium features. If you use only the free tier, no external network requests are made.

Data Sharing

We do not share your webpage content or browsing data with any third parties. For premium users, only license validation data (license key and browser instance ID) is shared with Lemon Squeezy to verify your subscription.

Third-Party Services

Clipwise AI may interact with the following third-party services:

Lemon Squeezy (Payment & Licensing)

Lemon Squeezy acts as an independent data controller for payment processing, invoicing, VAT handling, and transactional emails. When you purchase a premium license, Lemon Squeezy collects and processes your payment information, billing address, and email address according to their own privacy policy.

For license validation, Lemon Squeezy acts as a data processor on our behalf, processing only your license key and browser instance identifier to verify your subscription status.

OpenAI (ChatGPT)

Only accessed if you use the "Open in ChatGPT" feature. Your converted Markdown is sent directly to their service. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

Anthropic (Claude)

Only accessed if you use the "Open in Claude" feature. Your converted Markdown is sent directly to their service. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

We do not use any analytics platforms or tracking systems.

Data Security

Since all processing occurs locally within your browser and no data is transmitted externally, your content remains secure on your device.

Data Retention

We retain data according to the following criteria:

Local browser storage

Converted Markdown content and daily conversion counts are stored temporarily in your browser's local storage. This data is cleared when you clear your browser data or uninstall the extension. Conversion counts reset automatically at midnight each day.

Premium license data

License keys and browser instance identifiers are stored locally for as long as your license remains active. When you deactivate your license or it expires, this data is removed from your browser. Lemon Squeezy retains purchase records according to their own retention policy and applicable tax regulations.

Your Rights

Under Chapter 3 of the GDPR and other applicable privacy laws, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

• Right of access (Art. 15): You can request information about what personal data we hold about you.
• Right to rectification (Art. 16): You can request correction of inaccurate personal data.
• Right to erasure (Art. 17): You can request deletion of your personal data. For local data, you can clear it yourself through your browser settings. For license-related data held by Lemon Squeezy, contact them directly or reach out to us for assistance.
• Right to restriction (Art. 18): You can request that we limit how we use your data.
• Right to data portability (Art. 20): You can request a copy of your data in a machine-readable format.
• Right to object (Art. 21): You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
• Right to lodge a complaint (Art. 77): You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. For users in Italy, this is the Italian Data Protection Authority. Users in other EU/EEA countries can find their local supervisory authority on the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) website.

International Data Transfers

Clipwise AI is available worldwide. While all webpage content processing occurs locally in your browser, premium license validation may involve data transfers to Lemon Squeezy's servers, which may be located outside your country of residence.

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or Switzerland, any transfer of personal data outside these regions is conducted in compliance with applicable data protection laws, relying on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or adequacy decisions where applicable. Lemon Squeezy's data protection practices can be reviewed in their Privacy Policy.

Children's Privacy

Clipwise AI does not knowingly collect any personal data from children under the age of 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
